If you have common skin dry problems, the most important thing that you can do is moisturize. There are different classes of moisturizers recommended by dermatologists that include occlusive, humectants, emollients, and protein rejuvenators.

Moisturizing your skin happens in four different steps; skin barrier repair, maximize moisture, reduce loss of water, and restore the skins ability to retain water.

An occlusive moisturizer for skin dry problems physically blocks water from being lost. Ingredients that can do this include petrolatum, lanolin, zinc oxide, oil, and minerals. The most common reasons for a skin dry occlusive moisturizer is for psoriasis and dermatitis. Problems with these known ingredients include that petrolatum is messy, mineral oil causes folliculitis, some might cause pimples, and lanolin is known to cause dermatitis.

Humectants are a common moisturizer for skin dry issues also. They are known to attract water to the skin. Many of the ingredients used in these types of moisturizers include glycerin, sorbitol, urea, alphahydroxy acids, and sugars. Humectants are commonly used to heal skin dry problems like psoriasis and rejuvenating the skin. However, urea and lactic acid may be irritants to the skin for many people.

Emollients are commonly used as anti-aging products but they are not always effective for skin dry issues. They contain cholesterol, squalene, and fatty acids that are known to reduce the roughness in the skin texture. They work by droplets of oil filling in the extra gaps in the skin, which produces a smoother surface of the skin.

Rejuvenators are also commonly used for skin dry problems and they are called rejuvenators because they rejuvenate the skin by replenishing essential proteins the skin needs. The ingredients in rejuvenators are commonly keratin, elastin, and collagen. These three ingredients are the most essential in skin creams and moisturizers.

Some people say that the rejuvenators are not likely to be effective because protein molecules are too large and that these moisturizers also cause dermatitis. However, most anti-aging and cosmetic skin care products contain the same three primary ingredients.
